For curious South African travellers, Réunion offers much more than a beach holiday, although beaches, watersports and endless lazy days are definitely on the menu, if you choose – with no need for visas and regular direct flights.
Air Austral, the French airline of the Indian Ocean, is the only airline to offer direct non-stop flights between Reunion and Johannesburg three times a week - Sundays, Wednesdays & Fridays. They also offer connections to, and from, many domestic and neighboring airports in the area.

Though Réunion is a French department, it's not part of the Schengen treaty. The visa requirements for entry to Réunion are almost the same as for France, bar a few exceptions. For EU nationals, a national ID or a passport suffices. Citizens of a number of other Western countries, including Australia, the USA, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand, do not need visas to visit Réunion as tourists for up to three months; they need only a passport.
